Fire crews from Dare County returned home on Monday, June 16, from a five-day deployment to the massive Evans Road wildfire in Hyde and Tyrrell counties.

One of the two Manteo brothers shot on June 17 remained in the hospital awaiting surgery and the man who allegedly shot them was being held in the county jail as of press time late Monday.

Bodie Island Lighthouse has been named one of 12 lighthouse finalists from among 49 nominees in the JELD-WEN® Reliable Lighthouse Restoration Initiative. The winner of the competition will win new JELD-WEN windows and doors.

Dare County Commissioner Mike Johnson said the newly-formed Dare County Commission for Working Watermen could serve as a pathway for building similar efforts in other North Carolina counties.

The 18,000-acre Emily and Richardson Preyer Buckridge Coastal Reserve site located about 15 miles south of Columbia was closed to the public Monday due to the threat from a wildfire in the area.
